Baseball

Coaches

Head Coach: Eric Anderson

Eric Anderson has been a part of five HAAL/WACC Championship teams, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, along with a 2014 WACC tournament championship and is entering his 17th year as a high school baseball coach.  Coach Anderson was voted HAAL Coach of the Year three times in his first seven years as head coach, and has led the Dons to NCS appearances in 10 out of the last 11 years.  The 2008 HAAL Co-Champion Dons had an historic year setting numerous records along the way including most wins (23), and an appearance in Arroyo Baseball’s first ever NCS championship game at the Oakland Coliseum.

Assistant Coach: Shad Strong

Shad Strong returns for his 11th year as an assistant to the Arroyo program.  Coach Strong helps out with infielders and hitters and can be found pacing the first base coaches’ box during games.  Strong was a graduate of Taft Union High School in 1993, where he earned first team All South Sequoia League and All Area honors along with team MVP in his senior year.  Strong earned first team all Central Valley Conference honors in his sophomore season at Porterville Junior College before finishing his junior and senior seasons at Cal State University, Hayward.

Assistant Coach: Steve Yamasaki

Coach Yamasaki is in his 8th season as the Varsity Pitching Coach.  Prior, he was an assistant on the junior varsity level.  He brings over 40 years of coaching experience to the Dons program.  Most recently "Yamo" was a long time Head/Assistant Coach for Alameda High School for 25 years.  During his many years as a coach he has won numerous awards including, Alameda Babe Ruth Baseball Volunteer of the year in 1990, AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the year in 2003 & 2008, and also earned the American Baseball Coaches Association 25 year service award in 1984.  Coach Yamo is also currently coaching the Alameda Merchants Collegiate Baseball Club during the summer.

Assistant Coach: Ajay Bromstead

Ajay Bromstead is in his 3rd year as an assistant coach with the Arroyo baseball program and 2nd on the Varsity level. Coach Bromstead will be the Catching coach along with helping out with hitters and calling pitches on game day. Coach Bromstead is a graduate San Leandro High school (class of 2001) where he lettered in baseball for two years and received 1st team designated hitter honors his senior year. 


 

Assistant Coach: Matt Shannon

Matt Shannon is in his 11th year on the varsity coaching staff as the outfield/bench/media coach.  Matt, a 2000 graduate of Arroyo, played three years of varsity baseball as a pitcher and a first baseman, receiving 2nd team all league honors his junior and senior years.  After high school Matt played two years at Chabot CC, where he received his AA degree in liberal arts.  After Chabot, Matt received a scholarship to play at Avila University in Kansas City, MO, where he was 2nd team all league in his junior and senior seasons, graduating with a BS in Business Administration focusing in Marketing.  Matt started his coaching career as the JV baseball assistant coach in 2005, taking over the head position the following year.  In 2006 Matt was also the head JV basketball coach at Arroyo.

JV Head Coach: Guy Gouveia

This is Guy Gouveias’ 11th year as junior varsity head coach for the Arroyo Dons and has amassed a 160-71-1 overall record including winning the JV HAAL/WACC Championship in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and  2015.   He is a 1977 graduate from Hayward High school where he helped lead them to a second place finish in NCS his senior year.  Continuing on to Chabot College, where he red shirted in 1978.  He was then the starting right fielder for two years.  His team finished in third place in the 1980 Junior College state championships.  He proceeded to finish his career at Cal State University Hayward from 1981-82.

Assistant Coach: Chuck Lienhard

Chuck Lienhard is now in his 11th year as an assistant for the Junior Varsity squad.  Chuck is a 1963 graduate of Arroyo High School, where he played both basketball and baseball.  Chuck coached in the Washington Manor Baseball League for thirteen years and is a current coach for the San Leandro Dodger summer program.  He also coached the San Leandro storm 15-16 year old traveling team that at one point was ranked #1 in the state of California in their division. 

Assistant Coach:Matt Welch

Matt Welch is in his 4th year on the Arroyo baseball coaching staff and his 2nd as the JV pitching coach. Matt graduated Arroyo High School in 2012 where he played one year on the varsity level and earned all-league honorable mention honors as a pitcher. Matt is currently attending Cal State University East Bay and is in the process of earning his bachelors of science majoring in Kinesiology and has aspirations to be a high school physical education teacher and baseball coach.  


 

Assistant Coach: Chris Pomykala

Chris Pomykala is now in his 10th year as a JV Assistant Coach.  Chris is a 1983 graduate of Arroyo High School where he played both baseball and football.  Since joining the JV Baseball Program, the coaching staff has had the honor of leading the team to 6 out of 9 Championships.  Coach Chris has been coaching different levels of Baseball for over 24 years; from Little League, Babe Ruth, Travel Ball, to High School.

Assistant Coach:Johnny Petros

Jonathan Petros is currently in his first year of coaching high school baseball. He graduated from Arroyo High School in 2008 and played 3 years of football and baseball at varsity level. He attended Chabot College for 2 years, before transferring to Texas College in Tyler, Texas where he continued to play baseball. He is currently employed with Local 551, Electrical Union. In his free time he enjoys spending his time outdoors and being with friends and family.
