This from Mr. Schneider:

This year I was offered a link to free DMV practice tests and info. thru a commercial service (but for no cost to us). I’d had a very difficult time finding good Driver’s Ed books through district approved vendors, as one particular student has been requesting all year.

Anyway, I signed up for the free online access which can be shared with students here: http://arroyohs.driving-tests.org

It does not bombard users with ads or spam, should be good for students who are interested. I will communicate with Leadership to get a PA announcement out and Dorothy and I will post signs to share out the option to use it with students in the Library.

Feel free to pass it on to any students you think may be interested.

These classes provide full transfer credits to both the CSU and the UC college systems. This is also helpful for the "Special Programs" section on the UC college application.

A mandatory meeting for parents and students will be held at Chabot on May 17th from 6:30 to 7:30 PM

Assistance with completing the packet will be provided in the Career Center on April 6th. Register in advance at the Career Center and pick up a packet.  Copy of the packet is also provided below.

This summer, SASC will be hosting its Summer Institute 2017 from Wednesday, June 14th to Sunday, June 18th. In this program, Southeast Asian high school youth will have the opportunity to participate in a five-day program at Cal in which they will engage in workshops, dialogues, and a variety of peer-bonding activities promoting higher education, cultural awareness, and other subjects.  They will also be paired with mentors who will provide guidance specific to their needs.  This all-expense paid program caters specifically to youth who are tied to the Southeast Asian refugee experience stemming from the Vietnam War.  We would like to stress that we are looking for students with diverse experiences and backgrounds, not just those with high academic performances.  Ultimately, SASC SI seeks to empower these students and to encourage them to empower their family and their community as well.

  • What do you enjoy most about your senior year?

  • One thing you would've have done differently in high school?

  • How do you cope with the stress of school?

  • What is one thing you would say to students when they reach a wall or fail?

  • Should I get involved with extracurriculars?

  • What other advice do you have for underclassmen?

Greetings from UC Berkeley!

I am writing to invite you to some exciting events and programs we will be hosting this spring and summer at the College of Environmental Design (CED) at UC Berkeley.

We have planned many ways for you and your students to engage and learn more about our vibrant undergraduate programs at CED:

  • Experience CED's studio culture and explore architecture, urban studies and landscape architecture as possible college majors at the embARC Summer Design Academy, a four week college prep summer camp for rising juniors and seniors.
  • Visit us on Cal Day (Saturday, April 22, 2017), UC Berkeley's annual open house.
  • Access our prospective student webpage to learn more about the admissions process and the options available to your students.
  • Engage with a student from CED! High school students may contact Omar Ramirez to schedule an in-person, phone or online video conference to chat with one of our undergraduate Admissions Ambassadors. Ambassadors are also available to visit Bay Area high schools.
  • RSVP for one of our monthly information sessions for prospective students or our Monday/Friday sessions in April for high school students.

We would be happy to mail materials about embARC and CED undergraduate majors to your school for your reference and for distribution to your students. (The embARC brochure is also available in digital form here.

Today's students have inherited unprecedented global challenges that require radically new ways to fashion the buildings, places and landscapes that harbor our diverse ways of life. CED guides creative and skilled students to craft built environments that are ecologically sustainable and resilient, prosperous and fair, healthy and beautiful. We show students the art and science of designing well-loved places that both nurture our senses and challenge our imaginations.

We hope to see you and your students soon in Wurster Hall!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Wolch

Calling all dramatics!

There will be an upcoming casting for anyone that is interested in being in the spotlight and performing in Arroyo High School's upcoming musical ..... Little Shop of Horrors.

Auditions will be held on Thursday January 26th after school in C-1 Ms. Jacob's room. If Thursday does not work out but you are interested PLEASE talk to Ms. Jacobs before the 26th to work something out. Also, be prepared to script read and sing as well.

The roles that you can audition for will be:

SEYMOUR (playing age of mid 20s) Our insecure, naïve, put-upon, florists’ clerk hero. Above all, he’s a sweet and well-meaning nerd. Strong acting and singing.

AUDREY (similar playing age to Seymour) The bleached-blond, Billie-Dawn-like secret love of his live. If you took Judy Holiday, Carol Channing, Marilyn Monroe, and Goldie Hawn, removed their education and feelings of self-worth, dressed them in spiked heels and a short black dress, and then shook them up in a test tube to extract what’s sweetest and most vulnerable – that’d be Audrey. Strong acting/comedy and singing.

MUSHNIK (middle aged? Old enough to ‘adopt’ Seymour as his son) This part can be played by either male or female. Their boss. A failure of an East Side florist. Strong comedic timing.

ORIN A tall, dark, handsome dentist with a black leather jacket and cruel tendencies. He is not, however, a leftover from the movie version of Grease. Think instead of an egotistical pretty-boy – all got up like a greaser but thinking alike and insurance salesman and talking like a radio announcer. Makes a couple of brief, but high impact, appearances. Strong character actor and singer.

THE PLANT (AUDREY II) An anthropomorphic cross between a giant Venus flytrap and an avocado. It has a huge, nasty-looking pod which gains a shark-like aspect when open and snapping at food. Male or Female

THE PUPPET The creature is played by a series of four increasing large puppets, manipulated by one non-speaking Puppeteer hidden invisibly inside. The plant grows from a few inches tall, to almost filling the stage. The role requires someone with physical acting skills to portray character and emotion purely through movement, and stamina to operate the large, heavy puppet.

CRYSTAL, RONNETTE and CHIFFON – (playing age of late teens to 20s) Three female ‘street urchins’ who function as participants in the action (when they have dialogue) and a Greek Chorus commenting and narrating the action (when they sing together in close harmony). They’re young, hip, smart, and the only people in the whole cast who really know what’s going on. Think the Supremes meets Destiny's Child.

ENSEMBLE – we will be looking for an ensemble to appear in various scenes and numbers. The minor roles of CUSTOMER, DRUNK, RADIO ANNOUNCER, MR BERNSETIN, MRS LUCE, SKIP SNIP and PATRICK MARTIN.

FYI - If you are cast, there will be mandatory practice during spring break!

The United States Tennis Association Norcal (USTA NorCal) awards four scholarships to high school tennis playing seniors.

Scholarship awards serve two equally valuable purposes: recognition of merit and achievement. Recipients need not be stellar or ranked tennis players or be required to go off and play in college. The review committee looks at the overall picture and most importantly, how the applicant has leveraged tennis in their life or what they have learned through tennis that they are applying to their lessons in their life.

There are FOUR college scholarships available, $2000 annually for up to 4 years, to support and encourage multicultural participation among high school students entering college. The scholarships are ethnic specific, except for the Arthur Ashe which is open to everyone.

The four college scholarship categories are:

1. Althea Gibson (African- American player/student)
2. Michael Chang (Asian- American player/student)
3. Arthur Ashe- open to all
4. Pancho Gonzalez (Hispanic player/student)

If you are enrolled in either AP Computer Science A or Introduction to Programming this coming school year, there is summer work available to you.

The work will consist of completing an online course in basic programming concepts using Karel the Dog.  The Karel module is the first portion of each course, but since we are running it over the summer we will not cover the material again during the school year.

Please go to http://tinyurl.com/ahs-cs-16-17 and fill out the survey.  You will receive instructions for enrolling in and completing the course via the email address you enter within a week after school ends.
