Arroyo Students Do Well at UC Berkeley Robotics Competition

T he Rainbow Butterflies – the Arroyo Pioneers in Engineering robotics team – finished tied for 4 th out of 12 groups in last weekend’s competition. The students built Jeff the robot with assistance from 3 UC Berkeley engineering students over the last 7 weeks, culminating in this past weekend’s competition. Jeff was programmed to navigate a maze unattended, then to retrieve large blocks and flip even larger dice, all in an attempt to outscore the opposition. After spending Saturday in practice and qualifying matches, our own Rainbow Butterflies were matched with the Lionel Wilson College Prep Lionels. The first match did not go as planned, with a 12-0 loss that was coupled with the robotic equivalent of congestive heart failure on Jeff’s part. With the assistance of the UC Berkeley debug squad, and after several agonizing minutes in intensive care, Jeff emerged literally with seconds to spare to win his next match. The RBs kept winning, eventually piling up 3 victories in a row before finally succumbing to the Dragon/Jay Hawk team. Considering that most of the development squad had no experience in robotics or most related fields, and that the team started the contest a week after the official kickoff, and 4 months after the application period started, it was an incredible run! Congratulations are due to: Brandon Cheng, David Cheng , Edward Duong, Jennifer Gao, Minnie He, Calvin Ip, Kevin Jiang, Eric La, Kenny La, Calvin Mei, Shaphen Pangburn, Wilbur Shi, Andy Tan, Curtis Tom, Hau Truong, Kelly Wong, and Kevin Yu As well as thanks to Ms. Armada, Mr. Baughman, Ms. Clark, Mr. Doolittle, Ms. Mountain, Mr. Smith , their families, and countless others for supporting the team, both from afar and at the practices and events as well.
